EXPERIENCE ROCK HISTORY!
VAN MORRISON – MOONDANCE – Feb. 28, 1970
Van Morrison is The Man; even before this classic Moondance album, even before Astral Weeks, Van was The Man back when he was the lead singer for the Irish Rock band THEM!
The self-titled THEM album is a major groove throughout and every cut is honest, strong, soulful, otherworldly, melancholy, deep, and rocks harder than anyone at the time, or in many cases, since.
While most of the immensely-popular “Singers/Songwriters of the ’70s” genre were Folk based artists; Van distinguished himself as a Rock based singer/songwriter. This gave him a unique voice both literally and creatively.Van has an engaging way of injecting Rock Spirit with tinges of Jazz in nearly a Capella verses and vocals.
By 1970, 00individual’s music appreciation had reached a pretty sophisticated level from his early interest in ’50’s music as a little Rocker. This acquired knowledge and taste led him to find music that he could share with a girlfriend or when in a mellow mood. Even Hard Rockers need some variety and Moondance along with other 1970 releases such as Dave Mason’s Alone Together, and CSN&Y’s Deja Vu, were perfect to match a mellower Rock mood.
Whereas Van’s solo debut, Astral Weeks was more sweeping in nature with epic-length tracks,
Moondance stepped-up the tempo and shortened the tracks’ length with classic results that actually captured a magickal place in time whose Sonic Spirit can be shared by all generations to come.
Moondance is a record that is filled with Hippie Happiness!
