EXPERIENCE ROCK HISTORY!
the ROLLING STONES – THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST – December 8, 1967
00individual has a great fondness for this exceptional album that paralleled the earliest beginnings of his psychedelic awareness.
We had already had a summer and fall full of Sgt. Pepper’s and this new Stones album was a cool, spacey, psychedelic Rock surprise! This music was a joy to hear and an album cover to behold
Since then 00individual has done his research and regardless of, or in spite of, even the Stones denigrating this album, it will never take away from the era-perfect music that those of us who understood and appreciated what the Stones attempted and succeeded got to experience.
There are two issues that kept this from being one of their highly-regarded classics; one, the Stones weren’t the Beatles, they were a Rock Band not a Pop Combo. For the Beatles to adapt Pop songs to a psychedelic level was just polish on what they had been doing all along – and yet there’s not a “Rocker” on Sgt. Pepper other than the opening track, whereas, we must remember that this was a stretch for the Rockin’ Stones who had to switch to a “Pop” mode, retain the “Stones” mystique and meet the challenge of the new material they were writing for a psychedelic album – all while stoned out of their minds. (Hearsay, by now-dead witnesses, but more than likely, likely)
And while I applaud the Stones for even making this album – I sense that under the “Pepper” zeitgeist they unconsciously restrained themselves. They have referred to this album as an “answer” to Sgt. Pepper’s and whether that was really the case or a side-step, the Stones could have by-passed the “answer” and posed a “question” – one that ventured off into some darker psychedelic pieces like 2000 Light Years From Home that we all knew they were capable of , . . and that were coming. . . . soon.
And two, they didn’t live up to the obvious – Their Satanic Majesties Request – that would come next year with “Beggar’s Banquet” and the glorious “Sympathy For The Devil” . . .
. . . unless, . . . these songs were the filled Requests of Their Satanic Majesties – if that were the case then Their Satanic Majesties were a pretty mellow bunch of Psychedelic Dudes – not even a “19th Nervous Breakdown-esque” track in that “Request”?
OK,”Citadel” will qualify.
Legend has it that there was so much drugs (hallucinogenics were popular), partying, debauchery, chicanery and psychedelic shenanigans going on during the recording sessions that it’s probably a miracle that they got it recorded at all.
2000 LIGHT YEARS FROM HOME is one of the Top 13 Psychedelic Songs of the 1960s
