First – Happy “82” birthday. Bob!
With a career spanning 60 years, on May 24th, 2023, Bob Dylan turned 82! Happy Birthday, Bob!
While eading the Rough Guide series of books, this one on Dylan, 00 was taken back to the days on Point Dume, Malibu, when he lived a couple stones throw from Dylan’s .unique compound.
00 lived with his wife and newborn son, their dogs, cats, horses, and goats ducks, and chickens in a small converted “barn”.behind the houses at the corner of Birdview and Bluewater streets, on the the cliffs above Zuma Beach. The house in front on Birdview had a recording studio and is where Neil Young recorded his “Zuma” album.
Goldie Hawn lived across the street and her daughter, Kate Hudson, a very young child at the time, would come over with her nanny to visit our “petting zoo”.
Directly next door on Bluewater, and across from Dylan’s, lived Max Gail,” Wojejowictz” of the popular “Barney Miller” TV series, he had a big teepee erected and held real Indian pow-wows with drums and chanting that became welcomed ambient music.
While in ‘Dylan’s neighborhood”, 00 never saw him come or go; the compound was wood-fenced and the only thing visible was the spired onion-haped rooftop; Dylan recorded there often.
The Rough Guide was a good read. giving great depth of his life through his early years, marriges, kids, concerts, albums, and his NET-Never Ending Tour.
Dylan was the spokesman for a generation whether he liked it or not. 00 grew up with Dylan’s music through the ’60s while in his teens and was certainly affected by his music and lyrics as everyone was.
Iconic dialogue from classic counter-cultire movies and song lyrics would often be quoted or worked into conversations spontaniously without hesitation, as music and movies were memorable back then, and Dylan provided a treasure-trove of lyrics to use; Way too many to quote here, but would be fun for a future post.

A Life-long Indelible Memory
One day after coming home from school and walking to his bedroom in the back of the house, he ran his fingers across the ironing board and heard a song coming from the radio in the kitchen, which was on all day thanks to his Mom. He stopped and went into the kitchen to hear better. He was stunned as he listened for the first time to Dylan’s “like A Rolling Stone”. He was mesmerized as he stood and listened to the whole song. This was truly amazing, “What was this!?” he thought. It was just the beginning . . . music had changed forever. The two to three minute song barrier was broken- and it was inspiring, glorious, and meaningful.
Sigh.
Happy 82nd Birthday, Bob!
Thanks for the wonderful gift of the soundtrack to a very fortunate generation’s life!
